Chris Toepker


Chris is currently the General Manager of Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Multimedia Innovation Center research lab and M-Lab commercialization lab. He comes to the post with experience in conceptualizing, designing, developing and launching multimedia products in Asia and the world. Before joining PolyU he was the CEO of Upper Deck Asia, where he used his 20+ years in Asia (including fluently speaking, reading and writing Chinese) and 10+ years in toys, games and entertainment to oversee all aspects of the business. In 2008-2010 he not only made World of Warcraft the number one trading card game in China, he also delivered tens of millions of dollars worth of goods to Upper Deck’s US and European sister companies.

Earlier he worked for Wizards of the Coast where he introduced Magic: The Gathering trading card game to China in 1998. He went on to take Wizards' organized play and tournaments for table-top “massively multiplayer real-world games” in Asia and Latin America to record-high attendance in 2000-2002. He also rescued and revitalized Wizard's miniatures category by revamping the approach and launching Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars Miniatures in 2003.

In 2004 he joined Philips Electronics where he managed the key Driver and Endorser marketing campaigns for GoGear MP3 players globally and Xenium mobile phones in China. In 2006 he became the COO of Lamplighter Studios, a supplier of digital production services for video game developers which delivered award-winning work for BioShock and many other major titles.
